The cover has a cut-out in the back in case you would like to use the Moleskine elastic, or you can tuck it under the back cover if you don't need it.

That gives an "Old World" effect or "Aged" look. The color returns when heat is applied or friction from rubbing a cloth or your hand in that area. This is considered a mark of high quality.
